Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CAMK PAN) is a leading Polish scientific institution in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. Established in 1978, the Center operates in Warsaw and Toruń.
The Center’s employees participate in international observation projects such as H.E.S.S., CTA (very high energy gamma ray observations), Herschel (satellite infrared observations), SALT (optical telescope approx. 10 m in diameter, located in South Africa), INTEGRAL, Fermi (satellite gamma ray observations), LIGO-VIRGO (detection of gravitational waves) . The Center is carrying out the SOLARIS research project to search for extrasolar planetary systems, funded in part by the European Research Council. CAMK also operates a ground-based communication center for Polish scientific satellites BRITE.
CAMK runs a doctoral program and promotes research, among other things, through popular science lectures entitled “Meetings with Astronomy.”
