The Institute’s primary mission is to conduct scientific research and develop research teams. IP PAN scientists also conduct applied research for the needs of business, educational institutions, social policy, and health policy. The IP PAN team was also involved in the creation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (currently SWPS University).
The unit is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees and to initiate proceedings for the award of the title of professor. It runs a Doctoral School in cooperation with the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN) and the Institute of Social Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ISP PAN), and also offers support for external doctoral studies.
