The Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPIŚ PAN) is the oldest scientific institution in Poland conducting comprehensive basic and applied research in the field of environmental engineering, covering technical, natural, spatial, and legal-economic issues. The history of the unit dates back to 1961, when the Scientific Research Department of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze was established, later transformed into an institute.
Areas
engineering and environmental protection, environmental shaping
The research potential of IPIŚ PAN focuses on conducting research related to various issues, including the impact of local factors on the physicochemical composition of atmospheric aerosols and the characteristics of air pollutant emissions. Scientists working in five research departments also deal with the reclamation of post-industrial areas, urban climate shaping, area pollution of the environment in soil, ground, and water, wastewater treatment technologies, as well as the development of techniques and technologies for waste recovery/disposal.
The Institute also includes the IPIŚ PAN Research Laboratory, which is accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation. The laboratory’s task is to develop research procedures for the analysis of water, sewage, soil, and waste samples.
The unit conducts and co-conducts grant projects, including international cooperation, e.g., with the Czech Republic. It co-conducts the “Joint Doctoral School” together with other units.
