The Institute of Rock Mechanics (IMG PAN) is an institution with traditions dating back to 1954. Its original scientific and research profile focused on hard coal mining, rock mechanics, and fluid physics.

This subject area is being systematically expanded and currently also covers the use of IT techniques and modern technologies in areas related to environmental, mining, and energy engineering. In four workshops and three laboratories, nanomaterials are also tested in energy and environmental applications, unique research instruments are constructed, and advanced processes occurring in rock centers and unsteady gas flows are modeled.
The Institute’s research teams, in cooperation with foreign entities, actively participate in international research projects and are leaders in national grants. Thanks to its modern equipment, the unit participates in research work in international teams. The research conducted is comprehensive, covering the entire cycle from basic research to application.
The experienced scientific and engineering staff also carry out specialist research and expert analyses, as well as laboratory tests.
