Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IJP PAN) has been operating in Krakow since 1973. Its 10 laboratories conduct scientific research aimed at describing and documenting the Polish language as it is used today and in centuries past.

philological studies
The flagship projects of the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences include scientific dictionaries of the Polish language, based on its own linguistic material, sometimes collected over several generations. Historical dictionaries describing the language of Old Polish and modern times are created here. Dictionaries of contemporary Polish are also created, including the most comprehensive contemporary dictionary of the Polish language, developed exclusively in electronic form: “Wielki słownik języka polskiego” (The Great Dictionary of the Polish Language). The lexicographical projects of the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences take into account not only standard Polish, but also its various varieties, including dialectal ones. A detailed description of the latter is provided in the regularly published “Słownik gwar polskich” (Dictionary of Polish Dialects). The Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences is also compiling several dictionaries of proper names, as well as the “Słownik łaciny średniowiecznej w Polsce” (Dictionary of Medieval Latin in Poland).
The Institute also marks its presence in the field of linguistic geography through its participation in international projects such as the “Pan-Slavic Language Atlas” and the “Atlas of European Languages.”
Thanks to the use of quantitative linguistics methods (especially in projects in the field of stylometry and corpus linguistics), the unit’s scientific activity is part of the digital humanities trend. Collections of dictionaries and other original electronic resources are available on the IJP PAN website.
