Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGF PAN) is a multidisciplinary scientific institution engaged in advanced research, teaching, and services in the field of geophysics. It is one of the largest research centers in Poland. Since its establishment in 1953, it has been involved in exploring and monitoring the natural environment.

Underwater work related to the search for and recovery of wave, temperature, and salinity measuring equipment in the Hornsund fjord in southern Spitsbergen

The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences continues the long tradition of theoretical and experimental geophysical research in Poland. The IGF PAN is the only institution in the country that monitors global geophysical fields in the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, and selected elements of atmospheric physics.

The newly opened Belsk Laboratory Geoprocessing Laboratory in Belsk Duży specializes in the preparation of rock and mineral samples. It prepares them for further analysis, primarily isotopic analysis.

IGF PAS is the leader of a consortium of five PAS institutes – the Center for Earth and Planetary Research (GeoPlanet). The consortium provides broad access to extensive infrastructure and enormous research potential.

Tests of new seismic testing equipment. This is so-called wireless equipment, in which the sensor (geophone), battery, and digitizer are all housed in a single device.

The Institute also actively participates in global research on polar regions. It manages the Stanisław Siedlecki Polish Polar Station in Hornsund, Svalbard – a unique place with international status that conducts monitoring in this part of the Arctic. It also manages the A.B. Dobrowolski Polish Antarctic Station, located in Bunger Oasis in East Antarctica, which has remained in hibernation until now, and to which, after more than 40 years, the 4th Geophysical Expedition was organized in 2021/2022.

The unit has scientific category A in the field of Earth and environmental sciences.
