Systems Research Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences (IBS PAN) has been operating since 1976. The unit works in the field of computer science, particularly in computational intelligence and artificial intelligence, as well as in the field of automation and control theory and systems analysis.

The unit has developed modern methods of data analysis, advanced methods of modelling imperfect information, applications of computational intelligence methods in statistics and reliability theory, decision support methods (including preference modelling and consensus building), mathematical models of complex systems (including those combining classical probabilistic approaches with non-probabilistic imprecision modelling, concerning, among other things, environmental pollution).
The unit primarily conducts basic research. It is also involved in the implementation of many research projects, including European ones, concerning, among others, the development of modern methods of modelling, planning and management in the field of agriculture, the Internet of Things, and the development of new methods of data analysis. The research conducted is interdisciplinary and concerns multifaceted and multi-criteria problems requiring the application of methodologies appropriate for various scientific disciplines, such as computer science, automation and robotics, environmental engineering, telecommunications, management sciences and economics.
The established position of IBS PAN in global science is confirmed by its extensive cooperation with many leading scientific centres. The Institute is a co-organiser of the Doctoral School of Information and Biomedical Technologies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (TIB PAN).
