The Franciszek Górski Institute of Plant Physiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFR PAN) in Krakow was founded in 1956.

Measurement of leaf stomatal conductance using a porometer and chlorophyll fluorescence in a growth chamber – in vivo parameters for assessing the physiological condition of sorghum plants under low temperature stress conditions. A unique feature of the research scope of the IFR PAN is its interdisciplinary nature, combining biological and agronomic sciences with a particular focus on ecophysiological factors and environmental stresses that affect crop productivity and yield quality.

The scientific staff of the IFR PAN consists of several dozen scientists. They conduct research at all levels of plant physiology – from molecular physiology to integrated physiology at the organ, whole plant, and field levels. Scientific research is conducted in five departments and several research groups as part of projects financed by national and international foundations and the institute itself.

The Department of Stress Biology is one of five departments within the structure of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It focuses on the functioning of plants under abiotic stress (caused by, among other things, drought, salinity, or strong light) and biotic stress (where plant responses to infections are studied).

IFR PAN cooperates with many research institutions and universities in Europe, especially in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary. The institute has well-equipped laboratories, plant growth chambers, and research equipment for physicochemical methods, including a high-performance liquid chromatograph with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC MS/MS), gas chromatograph, FT-Raman spectrometer, isothermal calorimeters, apparatus for measuring PSI and PSII quantum efficiency, gas exchange, and molecular genetics research.

Young scientists have ideal conditions here to conduct scientific research and study at the Doctoral School.
