The Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) is a leading institution in the field of research on Polish literature and culture. It was founded in 1948 in Warsaw and became part of the Polish Academy of Sciences when it was established in 1952. The institute carries out long-term documentation and editorial projects, including Polish Literary Bibliography, Dictionary of 16th-Century Polish, Dictionary of Contemporary Writers and Literary Scholars, the Library of Old Polish Writers and the Library of Polish Enlightenment Writers, as well as editions of the writings of Jan Kochanowski, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, and Eliza Orzeszkowa.

The Institute runs a specialized scientific library and engages in various forms of publishing and educational activities. It shares its research results and knowledge through cooperation with cultural and educational institutions. For over 50 years, it has been organizing the Polish Language and Literature Olympiad for schools, and since 1990 also outside the country (including Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Greece, France, and Hungary). It is also one of the first centers of digital humanities, with a rapidly developing Center for Digital Humanities.
IBL PAN actively participates in international projects and networks, including ERASMUS+, COST Actions, and ECHIC. It is a member of, among others, the DARIAH-ERIC consortium, the “Time Machine” organization, which brings together over 400 scientific units from Europe and aims to develop technologies used in digital humanities, a partner of the CLARIN-ERIC consortium, and a member of the OPERAS consortium management group.
