About the branch

The Łódź Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as a corporation of scholars bringing together members of the Academy operating in the Łódź macroregion, has always been relatively small in terms of numbers. Since 1978, i.e. since the establishment of the Branch, a Branch Council has been appointed at the request of the President to act as its advisory body. It consists of distinguished scholars from Łódź and the region, chairpersons of the Branch’s committees, rectors of state universities, the President of the Łódź Scientific Society and directors of PAN institutions. Meetings are held in conjunction with the sessions of the Branch’s General Assembly.

Committees continue to play an important role in the work of the Branch. They perform coordination and organisational tasks, and their structure corresponds to the integration needs of the entire scientific community in Łódź. The committees initiate many research topics and organise numerous national and international scientific conferences. For the needs of the Łódź scientific community, committee members systematically prepare expert reports on the state of scientific disciplines in Łódź, including analyses of the community’s research tools and scientific literature. At the beginning of 1978, four subject-specific committees and two problem-specific committees were established: the Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences, the Committee on Biological and Medical Sciences, the Committee on Exact Sciences and the Committee on Technical Sciences, as well as the ‘Science-Culture’ committee and the scientific committee for the Bełchatów Industrial District. The committees were composed of eminent representatives of science representing various fields of research and all branches of science.
