Committees

The role of the committees is to promote science and provide the highest quality expertise for the needs of state authorities and reliable public debate.

Scientific committees

Scientific committees are appointed based on an assessment of the degree of development of a scientific discipline or related disciplines and the need for representation and integration of the scientific community. A motion to establish a committee is submitted by the dean of the division, and the decision is made by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The scientific committee consists of national members of the Academy according to their scientific specialisation and persons selected by the relevant scientific community. The committee may appoint specialists from various fields of economic and social life and practical application of science to its composition.

The procedure for electing members of the scientific committee and its bodies is specified in the regulations adopted by the Presidium of the Academy.

The tasks of the scientific committee include: considering important issues in the represented discipline or related scientific disciplines; organising debates, discussions and scientific conferences, as well as disseminating their results; preparing opinions, assessments, expert opinions and scientific forecasts; cooperating in the implementation and dissemination of the results of scientific activity; preparing scientific studies in cooperation with other committees.

Problem-oriented committees

Problem-oriented committees are established to perform specific scientific tasks of great cognitive, social or economic importance.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work of problem-oriented committees, scientists and specialists representing various fields of science or scientific disciplines are appointed to their composition. The committee may also conduct work with the participation of ad hoc representatives of various scientific disciplines.

The decision to establish a problem-oriented committee is made by the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which defines its tasks and organisational structure. It also appoints the chair and members of the committee.

National committees

National committees are appointed at the request of the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences by the Academy's Presidium for the duration of their term of office in order to maintain and develop cooperation with international scientific organisations. Their composition ensures representation of the entire scientific community of the country.

Scientific committees and problem-oriented committees may also perform the function of a national committee.
