Committee for Marine Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences

The initiator of the establishment of the Polish Academy of Sciences Committee for Marine Research (KBM PAN) in 1961 was Professor Stanisław Szymborski, then Head and founder of the Polish Academy of Sciences Marine Station in Sopot. The establishment of this Committee was aimed at initiating the development of marine research in Poland and cooperation between the few scientific teams working on the sea at various Polish institutions, such as the Marine Fisheries Institute, the Marine Branch of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Gdańsk University of Technology, Gdańsk University of Education, and the Polish Academy of Sciences Marine Station in Sopot, which was the precursor to the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Oceanology, established in 1983 and currently in operation.

The committee’s scope of activity: oceanology, marine physics, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, geophysics and marine hydrotechnology, marine environmental protection.
