Committee of Biotechnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences

In 1989, on the initiative of Prof. Włodzimierz Ostrowski (President of the Krakow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences), the KB was established for the first time at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The scope of the KB’s work included innovative genetic engineering techniques that opened up completely new possibilities in the production of food, medicines and medical diagnostics, as well as industrial production.


Scope of activity of the KB PAN:

  • Red biotechnology is biotechnology whose main area of interest is healthcare.
  • Green biotechnology, also known as agrobiotechnology, deals with aspects related to agriculture and solutions used for food and non-food purposes.
  • White biotechnology is biotechnology dealing with the use of biological systems in industry and environmental protection.
  • Blue biotechnology covers the broadly understood issues of water biotechnology, i.e. lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.
  • Violet biotechnology deals with social issues such as the acceptance of GM food, legal issues including legislation, intellectual property protection, as well as philosophical and ethical issues.
