Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of PAS in Łódź

The Center of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBMiM PAN) was established in 1972 on the basis of two research groups led by members of the Polish Academy of Sciences: Prof. Jan Michalski (chemistry of heteroorganic compounds) and Prof. Marian Kryszewski (polymer physics). The Center conducts research at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and biology. This includes problems in the fields of organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and polymer chemistry and physics, including the development of advanced materials and biomaterials, both low- and high-molecular-weight.

Research conducted at the unit includes methods of stereoselective synthesis of complex organic compounds containing heteroatoms such as phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon, new techniques for stereocontrolled synthesis of modified oligonucleotides, and their application in protein bioengineering. The unit also develops new methods for the synthesis of polymers, their research and applications as biomaterials, construction materials or for use in electronics. Great emphasis is also placed on structural research of biomaterials, polymeric and composite materials.

Over the course of its 50 years of existence, the Center has grown from a small laboratory located in a historic palace to an extensive and multidisciplinary research institute. It employs over 180 people, of whom approximately 140 are directly involved in scientific research.

The Center is one of the largest institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and one of the most recognizable in the region. It employs many people from other countries and places great emphasis on exchange programs with foreign institutions. Together with units in Łódź, it runs the multidisciplinary BioMedChem Doctoral School. CBMiM PAN belongs to several international consortia. It is also involved in research programs financed by national and international funds.
