Centre of Polymer Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences

Centre of Polymer Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CMPiW PAN) was established in 2007 through the merger of two units of the Polish Academy of Sciences: the Department of Coal Chemistry (established in 1954) and the Center for Polymer Chemistry (established in 1968). It is a leading institute in the field of research on polymers and various forms of carbon. The interdisciplinary nature of the work combines basic and applied research, and the results obtained are used to develop modern solutions for the economy.

The Center’s researchers focus on the synthesis and study of materials for medicine, environmental protection, and optoelectronics, such as: biodegradable polymer materials with controlled structure for the packaging industry, bioresorbable polymers active in selective transport and controlled release of biological substances, stimulus-sensitive polymers capable of encapsulating biologically active substances and complexing DNA, materials with photochromic properties, luminescent properties and for third-generation photovoltaic cells, polymer-carbon composites containing ordered carbon structures, including graphene and its functionalized forms, carbon nanotubes, carbon foams.
