Institute of Computer Science Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPI PAN) was founded in 1961 as the Computing Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences and is one of the leading research centers in the field of computer science in the country. The institute’s interests mainly concern artificial intelligence and computational linguistics, as well as basic research in the field of computer science. IPI PAN has achieved world-class results in each of the areas studied by research teams from two separate departments: Theoretical Foundations of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Areas
technical computer science and telecommunications, and linguistics
Institute Research
The Institute conducts research on machine learning, statistical inference, and information theory, including methods for variable selection in high-dimensional classification and regression problems, differential modeling, and probabilistic models of natural language. Methods for analyzing and modeling large medical data sets, primarily related to lifestyle diseases (cancer and type 2 diabetes), are being developed and refined. Another important research topic is the engineering of knowledge acquisition from various sources, including search engines.
Another research topic is multi-agent systems, their specification and formal verification, including issues related to the extension of existing formalisms with aspects of time and knowledge, as well as the modeling and verification of actual electoral procedures and electronic voting protocols. One of the most important achievements is the STV (Strategic Verifier) tool, which enables the verification of strategic capabilities in multi-agent systems and the synthesis of winning strategies.

Computational linguistics and Doctoral School
For years, work has also been carried out in the field of computational linguistics, including research on the formal description of natural language, as well as national and international projects aimed at developing tools and resources for automatic text processing. This has resulted in, among other things, the National Corpus of Polish, the Morfeusz electronic dictionary of Polish, COMBO, a tool for preliminary text processing to the level of syntactic dependency analysis, and Korpusomat, a tool for creating electronic text corpora. The Institute belongs to the CLARIN-PL and DARIAH-PL research infrastructures. Since 2012, it has been publishing the Journal of Language Modelling.
The Institute is a co-organizer of the Doctoral School of Information and Biomedical Technologies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (TIB PAN).
