Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ING PAN) in Warsaw has been operating since 1956 (initially as the Department of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences). It conducts research on the geosystem, with particular emphasis on the interactions between the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere in the geological time domain. The research also covers objects of cosmic matter, whose origin and evolution have significantly influenced and continue to influence the development of our planet.

Activities of the Institute

A particular priority among the methods used here is the development of isotope geochemistry, both in terms of infrastructure creation and the development of methodologies for determination and interpretation of results. Research also covers the history of changes in paleogeosystems and contemporary systems, including the study of specific geological processes and their effects. The diversity of specializations pursued at the institute allows for research across a broad spectrum, from the early evolution of the Earth to the present day. The work is carried out in seven departments and two laboratories.

The ING PAN Geological Museum in Krakow took part in the Night of Museums in Krakow in 2019.

Popularization of science

The institute widely promotes the achievements of its employees. The scope of the unit’s activities is also presented by the Geological Museum located at the Research Center in Krakow. Young scientists are trained at ING PAN as part of the GeoPlanet doctoral school run in cooperation with other units of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
