Institute of Law Studies Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (INP PAN) was established in 1956 on the basis of two existing departments within the Academy: the Department of Criminology and the Department of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The unit coordinates and unifies basic research in the field of legal sciences from a theoretical perspective, as well as in relation to legal practice.

Activities of the Institute

The unit conducts high-quality scientific research, in particular of a comparative, international, and interdisciplinary nature. INP PAN is divided into 13 departments and 11 centers, located in Warsaw, Poznań, and Wrocław. Its work covers, among other things, constitutional law, criminal law, labor law, family law, children’s rights, and criminology. Intensive international cooperation takes place with other leading units, including those in the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Germany, Croatia, and Taiwan.

The Institute of Legal Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences conducts teaching activities at many levels, including postgraduate studies, doctoral studies, and doctoral seminars in law. The unit has a publishing house that publishes peer-reviewed monographs and collective works in the field of legal sciences and criminology. The unit disseminates research results through book publications, the organization of scientific conferences, and the activities of three scientific societies.
