Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IM PAN) has been operating since 1948. It is the best scientific mathematical unit in Poland, conducting research in the field of mathematical sciences and their applications – number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, topology, logic, differential equations, probability, combinatorics, mathematical physics, data analysis, machine learning, and others.
Areas:
mathematics
Research conducted
The institute employs approximately 90 scientists, including more than 20 short-term postdoctoral fellows each year. The aim of the research is to develop and improve mathematical theories, discover new relationships, and create methods, models, and other tools for solving problems in science and technology. The results of the research take the form of theorems justified by precise proofs.
Activities of the Institute
Outside Warsaw, the Institute operates branches in several major Polish cities. It participates in numerous international research projects, including those funded by the American Simons Foundation and the European Union. It organizes over 40 weekly advanced seminars and publishes many renowned journals. Its library, the Central Mathematical Library, is considered one of the best in the world. The Institute co-runs two doctoral schools, including one with the University of Warsaw. It also awards scientific prizes that are recognized in the community.
Stefan Banach International Mathematical Center
Established in 1972 as part of the Institute, the Stefan Banach International Mathematical Center is a world-renowned venue for promoting and supporting international cooperation among mathematicians. Each year, it organizes approximately 50 intensive conferences and workshops, attended by around 2,500 mathematicians from around the world. Many of these events take place at the Research and Conference Center in Będlewo near Poznań, whose operation is an important part of the Institute’s social activities. The Center presents its research results in the Banach Center Publications series. Its activities are supervised by the International Scientific Council.
