Among the projects conducted here, the following are particularly noteworthy: “From East to West, and Back Again: Student Travel and Transcultural Knowledge Production in Renaissance Europe (c. 1470- c. 1620)”, a study funded by a European Research Council (ERC) grant, and the European Social Survey (since 2014, included by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the Polish Roadmap for Research Infrastructure). The unit implements the Polish Panel Survey POLPAN, a unique panel research program conducted since 1988 at 5-year intervals, concerning changes in social structure.
IFiS PAN cooperates with other Polish and foreign scientific institutions (e.g., in the USA, China, France, and Germany). Examples include research projects carried out in cooperation with Ohio State University (USA) and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG). The Institute preserves the legacy of Polish humanities. It does so through projects such as Corpus Philosophorum Polonorum (2012-2018), a series of publications presenting the achievements of early Polish philosophy, and the documentation and publication of the achievements of the Warsaw School of the History of Ideas.
The institute has been offering doctoral studies in English for 30 years. Since 2019, it has been developing an international doctoral school together with the Institute of Psychology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It also publishes scientific journals with national and international reach, such as Studia Logica and Studia Socjologiczne.
