Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IITiS PAN) has been operating in Gliwice since 1968. As its name suggests, the institute conducts theoretical, forward-looking, and applied research in the field of information technology. Its work is carried out in cooperation with companies.
Areas
computer science, automation and robotics, electronics
Research conducted at the unit is carried out in five teams and focuses on several areas. The first is the development of the Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT) and their services. It covers methods of modeling and evaluating network efficiency, intelligent routing, and wireless networks. Within this area, the unit cooperates with many European centers on transmission security and innovative IoT applications. Another area is Quantum Computing Systems, covering quantum computing feasible in the near future, simulations of quantum computing, quantum systems and quantum protocols, controllability of quantum systems, and properties of quantum communication channels. The unit’s employees also deal with computer vision and multimedia systems. This includes multimedia information processing, medical diagnostics support, virtual and augmented reality systems, and the use of artificial intelligence methods in detecting anomalies in liquid and gas distribution systems.
The Institute runs a bunch of grant projects. Between 2016 and 2021, it did 31 projects, including three European ones from the Horizon 2020 program. In addition, 16 scientific projects and 12 research and development projects were carried out. IITIS PAN participates in the implementation of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ mission to promote, integrate, and disseminate Polish science.
The Institute joined the fight against the coronavirus pandemic by co-organizing the ANTYCOVID21 conference with the Committee on Informatics and IFIP and co-implementing a project on an integrated epidemiological threat analysis system.
