Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences

The Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IKiFP PAN) is the only scientific institution in Poland specializing in research in the fields of catalysis and surface chemistry. It was established in 1968 on the basis of the Department of Physical Chemistry of Surface Phenomena of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Areas: chemical sciences, physics, engineering, and environmental protection

Measurements using a confocal microscope

The unit conducts interdisciplinary research combining research workshops in chemistry, physics, biotechnology, chemical technology, materials engineering, as well as microbiology and medicine. The scientific focus of the Institute’s staff is on studying the molecular basis of catalytic processes and phenomena occurring at gas-solid, gas-liquid, and liquid-solid phase boundaries.

Surface measurements performed using scanning tunneling microscopy

In recent years, the Institute of Colloids and Polymers of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been intensively developing biotechnology research focused on biodegradable polymers and the use of enzymes and proteins, as well as broadly understood nanotechnology research aimed at developing nanomaterials for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Surface research techniques using synchrotron radiation are also being developed. The Institute conducts both theoretical and experimental basic research, which is combined with applied research applicable to technological processes.

The Institute’s staff consists of over 120 employees, 82 of whom are directly involved in conducting research. In addition, several dozen doctoral students educated at the Krakow Interdisciplinary Doctoral School participate in the research.
