The unit conducts basic and applied research. The institute has been part of the Academy since 1952. However, the history of the garden dates back to the 19th century and the passion for nature of the Działyński family, the owners of the estate.

Employees conduct research in five departments. The unit also has a Mineral Analysis Laboratory. The ID PAN library has the richest collection of botanical and forestry literature in Poland and collects specialist titles in the fields of dendrology, botany, tree physiology and genetics, forestry, ecology and environmental protection.

The unit actively participates in national and international scientific projects. It also supports the development of modern forestry, working closely with the State Forests. It also conducts educational activities as part of the Poznań Doctoral School of the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

A special activity of the institution is the maintenance and development of the Arboretum. Through its activities, the unit promotes environmental awareness and disseminates knowledge about nature. A rich collection of trees and shrubs representing the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere has been gathered here. Numerous species represent the tree flora of Japan, Korea, China and North America. The arboretum’s collection includes approximately 3,500 species and varieties.
