PAN and EDPS discuss data protection in AI

On 27 February this year, the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor Marek Konarzewski, met with Professor Wojciech Wiewiórkowski, European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The topic of the conversation was issues related to the possibilities of cooperation between the Polish Academy of Sciences and the EDPS in shaping regulations on artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of personal data protection.

In this context, the role of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) as a scientific institution providing substantive support to state administration bodies was discussed, as well as the potential of the Academy in the area of research and expertise on the widely understood impact of AI on society and various branches of the economy. Issues related to the implementation of the AI Act and its harmonisation with current legislation, including RODO, were also raised. The interlocutors agreed on the need to ensure that the development and implementation of AI systems respect citizens’ right to privacy and comply with ethical principles, and stressed the importance of education and awareness-raising on data protection in the face of the dynamic development of AI technologies.

The meeting was a step towards closer cooperation between scientific institutions and regulators, aiming to create a coherent and effective legal framework for the development of AI that will both effectively support technological innovation and effectively protect the rights of individuals.

The meeting was also attended by Jarosław Mojsiejuk, head of the Crisis Management and Classified Information Protection Team at the Chancellery of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
