Committee on Medical Physics, Radiobiology and Diagnostic Imaging of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Originally, under the name of the Committee of Medical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Committee was first established in 1960. Then, in 1992, after merging with the Radiation Research Committee, it adopted a new, expanded name: the Committee on Medical Physics and Radiobiology. A person particularly deserving of credit for the creation of this committee was the well-known radiologist Witold Zawadowski. The Committee’s subsequent transformation was also related to the further expansion of its scope of activity as a result of the rapid development and importance of tissue structure imaging based on many new computed tomography techniques, including not only X-ray but also Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), as well as other phenomena such as Optical Tomography and Impedance Tomography. As a consequence of these events, in 2005–2006 the name of the Committee was again expanded to the Committee on Medical Physics, Radiobiology and Diagnostic Imaging. This name accurately reflects the scope of the Committee’s activities and, for this reason, has become established and remains in use to this day.
