Prof. Dr. Hab. Dariusz Jemielniak is a professor of management at the Kozminski University, where he heads the MINDS (Management in Networked and Digital Societies) department. Since 2016, he has also been a faculty associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard. In 2019, he became the youngest corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the fields of social sciences and humanities in history.
In his research, he analyzes online communities using both ethnographic and quantitative methods—merging ethnography with data science, he proposed the research method “thick big data”. He created the first ethnography of Wikipedia communities in the world. He studies the phenomenon of the so-called collaborative society, as well as communities of open knowledge and open software. He holds habilitations in management (2009) and sociology (2014).
A Fulbright scholar, “Polityka” magazine scholar, and recipient of grants from the Foundation for Polish Science, among others. He has won awards including those from the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Dorothy Lee Award. He has completed annual fellowships at institutions including Cornell University (Department of Anthropology), University of California Berkeley (Department of Sociology), and MIT (Center for Collective Intelligence). He has been a visiting professor at institutions such as the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (AI Department) and the University of Surrey (Department of Sociology).
From 1998 to 2004, he was the chairman of Collegium Invisibile. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Scientific Policy Committee in Poland. From 2015 to 2025, he served as a member of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. He is the Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Escola S.A., a member of the program council of the Copernicus Science Centre. From 2023 to 2027, he is the vice president of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
