We are now accepting applications for long-term research fellowships in Japan

We are now accepting applications for long-term research fellowships in Japan, lasting between 12 and 24 months, under the Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers 2027 programme, funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Basic information

The programme covers all fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The JSPS programme is open to researchers who obtained their PhD no earlier than 2 April 2021, or who will obtain it before the start of the fellowship. Those who have previously benefited from a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan are not eligible to apply.

Two places on the programme are available for researchers from Poland. The stay in Japan may commence between 1 April 2027 and 30 November 2027. The list of eligible host institutions is available here: List of eligible host institutes_FY2025. This list is subject to change; please check it when preparing your application documents.

One of the conditions for acceptance of a research stay in Japan is nomination by the Polish Academy of Sciences. Applicants should independently arrange the details of their stay with their prospective academic host in Japan – the JSPS does not act as an intermediary in finding hosts or host institutions.

Applications must be submitted to the PAS International Cooperation Department, exclusively by email, to the address: Renata.Kuskowska@pan.pl, by 31 October 2026.

The application pack should include:

  • a completed FY2027 application form;
  • a letter of acceptance/invitation from the prospective Japanese host of the visit, confirming their willingness to accept the candidate at a Japanese institution;
  • a letter of recommendation from the candidate’s current academic supervisor or line manager – not from the prospective Japanese host of the visit;
  • a copy of the doctoral degree certificate or proof of having been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • a letter from the candidate’s home institution nominating him/her for the above-mentioned scholarship.

Documents required by the JSPS must be in English. If any documents are issued in another language, an English translation must be attached. The translation does not need to be certified.

Please direct any queries to Ms Renata Kuskowska (tel. 22 182 65 11; email: Renata.Kuskowska@pan.pl).
