Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of Polish Academy of Sciences
The Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IMIM PAN) in Krakow is a scientific unit conducting cognitive and applied research. Research work is carried out in seven laboratories and concerns metallic materials, ceramics, and biomaterials. The mission of IMIM PAN is to conduct interdisciplinary research at the highest global level, successfully combining basic and applied research.
Areas
materials engineering and metallurgy
The modernity of the research topics translates into high bibliometric indicators for the Institute’s employees through publications in renowned journals.
The Institute cares about the development of its scientific staff and is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in the field of materials engineering.
As a unit of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute is not only involved in basic scientific research, which directly results from its statute and nature, but also attaches great importance to the education of young scientific staff within the framework of the Krakow Interdisciplinary Doctoral School (KISD). The unit’s mission also includes the education of highly specialized staff for the needs of industry, which constantly feeds and strengthens the country’s economic potential. As a result of cooperation with entrepreneurs, the Institute educates staff from the economic sector, undertaking, from the first edition, together with the Ministry, the idea of implementation doctorates, which concern very important issues from the common area of development of the Polish economy and science.
An example of the Institute’s intensive promotional activities is the publication of the journal Archives of Metallurgy and Materials, which has been published continuously since 1955 and focuses on metallurgy and materials engineering. Since 1988, the journal has been indexed in the Journal Citation Reports. The journal is available online on the websites of IMIM PAN and Department IV of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Access to current articles is available in the Open Access model, on the Polish Academy of Sciences Journal Reading Room platform www.journals.pan.pl and on the IMIM PAN website http://imim.pl/archives.
The Institute has a Research Laboratory Team authorized to perform tests in accordance with the requirements of the PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2018-02 in the field of electron microscopy (scanning and transmission), special microscopic techniques, measurements of physical and chemical properties using thermal analysis methods, mechanical and diffractometric property testing, as well as photovoltaics. The research laboratories at the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences have been continuously accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation since 1997. Proof of their high competence, complemented by modern equipment, is the flexible scope granted by the PCA, which allows for the modification of general research methods and procedures to meet customer needs. Keeping pace with technical and technological progress directly translates into broad and intensive cooperation with universities, scientific institutions, and industrial partners in joint ventures.
