Actions and plans for the benefit of Ukrainian scientific community

On April 3-4, the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) held the conference “Focus on Ukraine”. The aim of the meeting was to reflect on the activities undertaken so far for the benefit of the Ukrainian academic community. During discussion the participants tried to develop a common vision of the reconstruction of Ukrainian academic centers and the prospects for further development of science in Ukraine.

The conference has brought together representatives of Polish and Ukrainian universities and scientific institutions. It was also attended by representatives of foreign institutions from USA, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia.

The Polish Academy of Sciences was represented by: Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, adviser to the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences for Ukraine, Prof. Maciej Żylicz, PAS member and President of the Board of the Foundation for Polish Science. The young researchers were represented by Dr. Jacek Kolanowski, Chair of the Polish Young Academy.

Scientific initiatives to support refugees from Ukraine

The panel discussions were devoted to activities supporting Ukrainian higher education and science. Representatives of universities and the Polish Academy of Sciences provided their observations and recommendations.

“Now we need to focus on future activities and planning projects involving the best Ukrainian scientists. These people will then be responsible for rebuilding the science and research sector in Ukraine” – said Prof. Jerzy Duszyński.

In his speech, Prof. Duszyński presented the new support program for research groups from Ukraine. This project is implemented by the Academy together with its foreign partners. Applications were accepted until mid-January this year, and the preliminary results of the recruitment will be announced in the near future.

The panel “Scientific initiatives to support refugees from Ukraine” was also attended by Prof. Maciej Żylicz, Agnieszka Ratajczak from the National Center for Research and Development, Dr. Tomasz Szumełda from the National Science Center and Dr. Andrzej Dybczyński, President of the Łukasiewicz Research Network (online).
