During the meeting the representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, ALLEA, Leopoldina, the Royal Society in London, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and the Polish Academy of Sciences, discussed the current needs of researchers and scientific institutions in war-torn Ukraine and explored support options. Professor Anatoly Zagorodny, President of NANU, was the honorary guest of the meeting. He gave a first-hand account of the damage caused to Ukraine’s scientific infrastructure and indicated the most urgent needs of Ukrainian researchers. Moreover, a 10-point recovery plan for Ukrainian science and researchers was initiated.
The main goal of the plan is to support young researchers from Ukraine. The details of the plan will be known soon.
The participants also met with the Ukrainian researchers who have received research fellowships at institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences. “Scientists are the future of Ukraine. The post-war reconstruction of the country is not possible without the support of science and researchers,” said Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, president of the Polish Academy of Sciences, adding “This conference is a signal that you are not alone.”
So far, the Polish Academy of Sciences has supported nearly 200 scientists by awarding them with research scholarships at PAS institutes. The Academy is the main initiator and coordinator of aid activities. The Polish Academy of Sciences is actively seeking partnerships and accepts donations to support the stays of displaced scientists. Researchers benefiting from the aid maintain their Ukrainian affiliation.
