PAS support of Ukrainian scientists in the long term

The Academy is launching a new program for researchers. The change from supporting individuals to research groups will provide stability for a period of 3 years and a chance for Ukrainian researchers to develop. The new program will attract top scientists.

Long-term thinking is needed to secure the future development of Ukrainian science. The Polish Academy of Sciences, together with international partners, is organizing funding for research groups composed of Ukrainian researchers. The announcement of the latest offer for scientists took place during the conference „The Polish Academy of Sciences for Ukraine. Summary of the year and presentation of new opportunities” held on 5 December.

Assumptions of the competition for Ukrainian researchers

The assumptions of the new program were presented by Dr. Vaughan Turekian and Dr. Franklin A. Carrero-Martínez of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The program will be funded by NAS funds.

Scientists will be able to conduct research in the network of PAS institutes for a maximum of three years. The assumed annual budget will be up to $200,000 per research group, or $600,000 for three years. The research group will consist of up to five people. As with other international programs (e.g., Horizon Europe), applicants will have to demonstrate specific skills and experience.

Competition for research groups

This is also an opportunity for researchers who have stayed in Ukraine. Although the group will work together on the project, only the Principal Investigator (PI) is required to stay in Poland. He or she will also have the opportunity to hold research internships for several months at leading European and American units.

“The program is open to scientists with Ukrainian citizenship and researchers employed in Ukrainian scientific units as of February 24, 2022,” adds Mateusz Białas, director of the Representative Office of the “Polish Academy of Sciences” in Kyiv. During the project, all researchers will have dual affiliation – of their home unit and of the Polish host unit.

The final number of research groups to be supported will depend on the overall budget. These issues are still under discussion with partners. Requirements for applicants and all details will soon be on the PAS and partner websites.
