How to raise the visibility of articles in international science databases? How to make research findings more available and compelling to the general public? The Elsevier company, in cooperation with the Polish Academy of Sciences, provided training for scientific editors and publishers from Ukraine.

Several dozen editors and publishers representing various research units and universities in Ukraine came to Poland at the invitation of the Polish Academy of Sciences. They took part in the workshop conducted by a representative of Elsevier.

Thanks to the training, the participants got acquainted with the best international practices in scientific publishing. They also learned why it is worth to increase the global outreach of their journals by strengthening international cooperation, and had an opportunity to practice using databases. In addition, the participants were introduced to designing business models and using social media for effective research communication.

On the last day of their stay in Warsaw, the representatives of Ukrainian journals met with the editors of the Academia – popular science magazine of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The practical workshop was conducted by Daniel Sax, a longtime English-language editor of the magazine, and Jolanta Iwańczuk, editor of the Earth Sciences section. They presented the beginnings of the magazine, its mission and content. They also shared details and tips related to the publishing process, selecting interesting topics for articles, adapting the language of the magazine to modern standards, and the ways to make the content more appealing.

The workshop was followed by the discussion on the directions of development of Ukrainian scientific journals not only in the current situation, but also after the end of the armed conflict. The possibilities of cooperation between Ukrainian editorial offices and Academia were also considered.
