President of the Polish Academy of Sciences Prof. Jerzy Duszyński have been awarded for assistance provided to Ukrainian scientists. Together with him, Prof. Marcia McNutt received an honorary doctorate.
Doctor honoris causa is the highest scientific distinction in Ukraine. It is awarded by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NANU) for a significant contribution to the development of science and international scientific cooperation.
Prof. Anatoly Zagorodny, President of NANU, awarded this title to Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Prof. Marcia McNutt, President of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
The title was awarded in recognition of the commitment and support Ukraine received from Poland and the US. Shortly after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the two units reached an agreement. Thanks to the joint efforts of these two units and several other organizations and academies, it was possible to organize research scholarships at the institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences for over 250 researchers. This allowed talented researchers to continue their research work while maintaining their Ukrainian affiliations.
NANU also appreciated declarations of support for future plans related to rebuilding science in the occupied country. The academies agreed on the 10-point action plan for rebuilding Ukraine’s science, research and innovation.
“I would like to thank the President of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and its Presidium for this exceptional distinction. This is proof that our mission can be actively continued. We continue our efforts to seek further support and cooperation with the international community,” said Prof. Jerzy Duszyński.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Poles have joined the aid activities. Among many projects, it is worth mentioning activities aimed at scientists, e.g. various actions undertaken by institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Non-monetary support was also provided. One such example is a song “Give your hand to Ukraine”, appreciated by President Zagorodny, performed by actors from the Ateneum Theater and guests invited by them.
